Secretary Duncan spoke at a policy forum held by DeVry yesterday in Washington, D.C. and according to the Chronicle of Higher Education he expressed support for “the role that for-profit colleges play in higher education” and that he “emphasized the ‘vital role’ for-profit institutions play in job training. Those colleges, he said, are critical to helping the nation achieve President Obama’s goal of making the United States the nation with the highest portion of college graduates by 2020.”
This is a very positive development coming out of the Department of Education, especially after some recent biased media stories such as last week’s FRONTLINE “College, Inc.” program. As someone who has worked in both the private and traditional higher education sector, it is reassuring to hear Secretary Duncan recognize the benefits and necessity that each offer.
